Barbie I Can Be…

The Value of Dress-Up Play at My House

I’ve always loved playing dress-up.  I was a pint-sized fashionista as soon as I was able to dress myself.  I would raid my Mom’s and Auntie Arlene’s closets, trotting to the corner store for freezies in too-big dresses and high-heel slides.  I would relish in receiving hand-me-down jewelry from my Auntie Arlene — each piece was a treasure and allowed me to try on different personas, careers and lifestyles!

A few years older than my sister and younger cousins, our play together almost always involved me dressing them up like mini fashionistas and super models!  We all loved that play.

As I got older, I saved my dressing up for Hallowe’en and other (more appropriate) venues, and now, I encourage it in my own girls.  When they dress up, they can “try on” different grown-up roles.  I love it.

Did you ever play dress-up?  Do your daughters?
